InactiveMy AD sent me the meeting notes yesterday from the Board of Trustees meeting in Thomaston. This is what was said for wrestling:
The state will be moved to two High Schools next year with each hosting 4 classes to help reduce expenses. Wrestling lost $20,000 this year.
Does anyone have any more details or thoughts on this?

InactiveI find it hard to believe they lost money. I was told they weren’t charged for the facility usage of the Macon Arena (no real evidence to back that up). During the finals they said it was a record crowd. Makes it harder to believe.
200 weight appeals at $50 each makes 10K. Not sure how wrestling is losing money. But Yeah…..I like it in schools. Is there a school below 6A that has a gym that big? I know obviously Buford Arena is huge. I know North and South Forsyth have massive gyms. Do some smaller school have gyms that size? 4 classes is a lot.
What’s the 8th class? Girls?March 2, 2018 at 7:17 pm #10217Anonymous
InactiveThey sure did not lose money on the awards they gave out. Wrestling is just a nuisance to GHSA.

InactiveI think the two high schools if for Duals. I wouldnt doubt if they lost money on duals the attendance isnt very good. What is going to suck as a small school is them combining 1,2,&3A into 2 classes while leaving the others alone. The bigger classes are the ones with all of the forfeits at sectionals. If they are combining small classes combine the others as well!

InactiveYeah from our 7A sectional alone, I sent GHSA a $3,200 dollar check. I’m sure not every sectional is that well attended but on that weekend alone you can probably assume every section is sending GHSA AT LEAST $2,000. So at 14 sectional tournaments, $2,000×14= $28,000. It’s not like they hand out awards there, so besides paying refs, all that money is straight profit. I hardly see losing money being the real issue.
