What if we resurrected the GA Who’s Number One event from a few years ago? How many people on this list would accept the match? Who would be willing to host? What are some match ups that you would like to see. Mine would look like this….
Battle of the top two freshman
Michael Killic Woodward) vs Caleb Henson (Woodland)
This is a rematch of the MS Super 32 Finals from a year ago. These two are electric. Killic IMO is the best athlete in the freshman class. He is extremely strong and has a good motor. Henson is the best technical freshman in a loaded class. He is a banger that wears people down. He too has a motor.
Henson wins this time around on a takedown in OT. 5-3
Vincent Mannella (Woodward) vs Ben Williams (Milton)
We have one of, if not the best junior against the best sophomore. It’s no secret that I look Mannella,. What’s not to like? His a great wrestler that wrestles at a high pace. He’s humble on and off the mat. I also like Ben Williams. Would love to see Ben at a different school as I am worried he won’t reach full potential at Milton. Especially with Lutz now the HC at Etowah.
Too much Vin. Mannella dominates in the neutral position and wins easily 10-4
Gabriel Lee (Brookwood) vs Myles Starke (Camden)
Until last years State Tournament did anyone outside of FL and S. GA know who Myles Starke was until he beat a very good David Key in the finals? That’s what I thought.
Starke proves last year was no fluke and handles his business in Camden like fashion with a 8-3 victory
Caden McCrary (Woodland) vs Tyler Crew (Camden)
We have McCrary who finished his freshman season as an undefeated State Champion beating a stud 3X in the process. Not an easy task versus Crew who won his second title last year and finished fourth as a freshman.
McCrary wins this one easily. Too much offense. 10-3
Charlie Darracott (Buford) vs Jaxon Smith (Woodland)
Buford vs Woodland is like Ohio State vs Michigan- the two just don’t like each other much.
It is no secret that I am huge fan of Darracott. I have him as the #1 rated Junior. He is a grinder that is always looking to attack on his feet. His domination of DeSilva this summer proved to me his #1 ranking. I know Lucas beat him at Sophomore nationals last year but Lucas is very good. If they wrestle 10 times, Charlie is going to win 7 of them. Jaxon Smith has been a stud since the day he laced up wrestling shoes. Only injuries have slowed him from being the #1 ranked sophomore IMO. This would be a great match.
Smith pulls out the victory 5-3 in OT
David Key (Brookwood) vs Vincent Baker (Blessed Trinity)
Key is a stud with state placements of 2-1-2 so far. If not for an injury that kept him out most of the year, he might be a 2X er. Baker is a 2 time state champion and the most underrated stud wrestler in GA IMO. This would be a great match for the fans!
Vincent Baker makes everyone a believer and wins the match 4-3 on a late reversal.
Nick Krug (Camden) vs Logan Ashton (Buford)
We have Krug a 2X state champion versus Ashton a 3X finalist and 1X champion. Don’t let the fact he’s only won one title fool you. His finals losses are to Milner a 3Xer and McCrary who will be a 4X er when its all said and done.
Ashton grinds out a 4-1 decision.
Nick Stonecheck (Buford) versus Rayden Wilder (Camden)
Stonecheck a 2X state champion as a junior versus 3X finalist and 2X state champion Wilder. This is a interesting match up. Stonecheck is very athletic, funky and explosive. Wilder is methodical and an absolute hammer on top.
Stonecheck wrestlers at a high pace and in this match it hurts him. He has a chance to keep it close if he stays off bottom. In the end, Wilder capitalizes on a mistake and ends up getting a turn to win 6-1
Triple Main Event….
Gavin Kane (Cambridge) versus Drew Eller (Evans)
This is would be the rubber match between these two 2X State Champion juniors. Eller won the first one easily at the Buford tournament and Kane won the recent match up at the S32 qualifier. I don’t want to hear that Eller was coming off an injury. Kane unlike the first meeting didn’t look scared. He wrestled Eller much differently this time. He got heavy with his hands and Eller did not like it. Eller tried to out hip and out athlete Kane during their last match and Kane powered through each time and scored. Kane’s absolute dismantling of DeSiliva let me and everyone else know that he is much improved. No one scores 9 points on Lucas, especially in a 4 minute match!
Kane stays with the same game plan and physically controls the match and escapes with a 5-4 victory.
This one is sure to be like the 4th of July- plenty of fireworks
Tyler Hunt (Dalton) vs Trevor Burdick (Sonoraville)
3X state champ vs 3X state champ. Did I mention that they used to be team mates at Sonoraville? Hunt transferred to Dalton for his senior year. You think there is any bad blood as a result? All of the questions of “Whose team was it Trevor or Tyler?”, All the kids asking in Match class “Whose better you or Tyler?” This one has the makings to be a barn burner!
I like Hunt. Placing in Super 32 isn’t easy to do. On paper he would be most everyone’s pick to win the match. But there is something to be said about a kid who has never lost a state tournament- never! Not in youth and not in HS thus far. I am taking Burdick with a reversal late to win 4-1.
Jackson DiSario (Ola) versus Kyle Gollhoffer (Woodland)
What a match-up! Disaro a 2X state champ vs Gollhoffer a 3X state Champ! We have my number 1 ranked senior (and #1 overall) against DiSario who Tony thinks is the best wrestler in GA :). The only thing that would make this match up any better is if we can see it in February! Do they go the same weight? Would Jackson risk not being a 3Xer to derail a 4Xer?
Too much Gollhoffer. Close match 5-3 Kyle with the win.
