It’s that time of the year! And by time of the year I mean wrestling and hurting the feeling of some very sensitive people (yes Donny, I am talking about you)
Here is MY pre season rankings. If you don’t like these, do your own. If little Johnny doesn’t make the list- too bad. It’s not that big of a deal. I don’t care if your little Johnny beat someone on my list- I tried to look at the whole body of work. I don’t care about Freestyle results.
Camden has dominated as a team for a while now. While I am very and I mean very hesitant to go against Jess and company- can they lose 8 seniors and I mean GOOD seniors and still be the best team in the state? Part of me says no but then I remembered that they out placed Buford at the Jazztown duals this summer. I am sure that both teams were missing some starters but still is impressive IMO.
1- Buford (11 returning)
Went back and forth between Camden and Buford but in the end Camden did lose 8 seniors to Buford’s 3.
Buford returns 3 state Champs, 3 Runner-ups, a third and a sixth place finisher from last year
Camden returns 4 state champs and a fourth
2- Camden (6 returning)
#2 might not be appropriate. It might be more like 1A and 1B
3- Union Grove (10 returning)
UG returns one state champion (and the overall #1 wrestler in GA), 1 runner-up, 1 third and two sixth place finishers. Had it not been for missing weight (which I still can’t believe happened) Neace and Massey would both have been top 3.
4- Woodland (8 returning)
Woodland brings back a State Champ, a runner-up and a fifth place. Add in two stud freshman and Woodland will be a contender despite losing 6 seniors from a year ago.
5- Jefferson (11 returning)
If Thurmond would actually seek competition for his Dragons they might actually be higher. It’s hard to gauge how good they really are with the competition (or lack of) that they face. None the less this team is loaded with really good wrestlers. Add in Hurd (State Placer from Collins Hill) and a reported out of state move-in (can anyone confirm this)and Jefferson is a legit top 5 team.
Now onto the overall and grade rankings:
1) Justin Ruffin (SR)- I’m not even going to waste my time justifying this ranking. Come February he will be a 4X CHAMP
2) Kyle Golhoffer (JR)- 2X State Champion (#3 a few months away) and Super 32 placer.
3) Paul Robinson (SR)- Look at his body of work, it justifies a #3 ranking IMO
4) Tyler Hunt (JR)- 2X State Champion and Super 32 placer (he wrestled an outstanding tournament)
5) Logan Ashton (JR)- Returning State Champ and runner-up as a freshman and NHSCA placer. An injury kept him from competing at Super 32 or he would be higher on these rankings.
6) Jacob Mariakis (JR)- Returning State Champ (won it just coming off a shoulder injury) and a match away from placing at Super 32 (wrestled tournament with a torn shoulder)
7) Cody Cochran (SR)- Runner-up a year ago after capturing state titles as a freshman and sophomore. Has the ability to be a top 3 overall. If he recaptures the confidence and passion he had as a 9/10 grader- look out!
8) Braden Johnson (SR)- Returning State Champ (won it as freshman, runner-up as a sophomore. Could be ranked higher if he attended some National events.
9) Drew Eller (SO)- Easily won a state title as a freshman. What was more impressive is his Super 32 qualifier. He took out both Formato and Darracott (2 studs) on the way to wining the qualifier. I might have him ranked a little too low but 1) its my rankings and 2) he is just a sophomore.
10) I’m torn between 3 deserving wrestlers: Dawson Bates (SR), Rayden Wilder (JR) and David Key (JR). In the end, I am going to take the easy way out and give the ranking to the senior, 2X state champ (3X finalist) and App State commit Dawson Bates.

Little Johnny 2A (aka Social Circle) just beat Union Grove 52-17 at Grayson Duals.November 30, 2017 at 5:26 pm #8533AnonymousInactive
Pump the brakes chief- 2 things
1) Union Grove did not have everyone in the line-up
2) Congrats- you beat UG in a dual tournament… in November… without some starters
It’s no secret- I give very little (ask Commerce) credit to anyone 2A and below. These are my rankings and they are figured done with teams as full strength in mind. Keep beating better teams and you might make the cut.December 4, 2017 at 2:04 am #8542AnonymousInactive
52-17 is a pretty big margin. You would have to change 3 pin losses into 3 pin wins to overcome that deficit, but realistically Union Grove would probably need to win at least an additional 4 matches to beat Social Circle in a rematch. I guess you could pick up 3 close matches and turn all your remaining pin/tech/MD losses to decision losses. Either way it’s a big difference.December 4, 2017 at 11:17 am #8544AnonymousInactive
Valid point if rankings were based solely on duals. If we had a unified state tournament, would Social Circle beat UG? The answer is no, zero chance. Social Cirlce, aka Little Johnny, has a nice team. At tops, they have one kid that could place. UG on the other hand have two that could (one definitely walks through) win it in Ruffin and Johnson. Throw in Higenbotham and McDaniel and it’s not even close.December 10, 2017 at 12:30 am #8576AnonymousInactive
Snapon, i waited a little into the season to ask this question about your sophomore rankings. Do you know about the kid DeSilva from CH? Kid has started his season in like mid season form, thoughts?December 10, 2017 at 7:32 pm #8582AnonymousInactive
Not always easy to pull in data from all over the state, SnapOn, but you did a solid job. I have to give a big shoutout to the Evans HS kid from Augusta. He has been unbelievably impressive since coming into our state. Saw him first at the Super 32 Qualifier last season as a freshman as he mowed through a hammer bracket there. He has not slowed down as he went undefeated last year and I believe took 2nd at USA Nationals before claiming AA honors at Fargo. His stock is still rising IMO. No disrespect to any other wrestlers in our crazy solid sophomore class inside our state but he is the top dog in that pack sitting out in sleepy little Augusta. And the word is his brother is legit also as a freshman for Evans.December 10, 2017 at 8:05 pm #8584AnonymousInactive
Lucas is very good and is having a very solid year but who on that list do you put him over? All of the kids mentioned above him won State last year.December 10, 2017 at 8:08 pm #8585AnonymousInactive
Wrestledad- agree with you, Eller Is a stud. That’s why I have him ranked as the #1 Sophomore in the State and #9 overall. By the end of the year he probably will end up in the top 5. After Ruffin graduates, he will battle Golhoffer as the #1 wrestler in the State.December 10, 2017 at 8:33 pm #8586AnonymousInactive
Not sure how he ended up in Augusta other than maybe military family? I’m sure a lot of coaches and programs would love to have had him move into their neighborhood as a freshman! No matter, he’s the real deal and has been representing Georgia very solidly since his arrival here. Looking over this fall he won the big one at UNI in October after that winning that stud gauntlet at UG in September. Great shot in the arm to an area of the state often forgot about on the wrestling landscape.December 10, 2017 at 10:31 pm #8587AnonymousInactive
Very well said dad. Every program in the state would live to have both boys. Welcome to Ga!December 12, 2017 at 4:08 pm #8600AnonymousInactive
So….I always struggle to understand WHY….WHY….WHY these top tier teams do not plan to wrestle each other.
Kudos to Woodland….they are wrestling Commerce in a Dual in January. I know you do not toss any love our way snap-on but that should be a goodie. I just do not understand why the top 10 teams do not PLAN on wrestling each other. Who cares about streaks ….or rankings…….WRESTLE !!!!December 12, 2017 at 6:15 pm #8601AnonymousInactive
MachineIT you are right on. Looking forward to the next few weeks with events like the Kyle Maynard Duals and the Takedown Invitational where there will be a lot of inter divisional matchups. We will really get a sense of the major players after the next few weekends of action. On the mat is the place to create your legend.December 13, 2017 at 3:55 am #8605AnonymousInactive
I have tremendous respect for Commerce-it’s the rest of Single A I don’t think much of.
I agree with you, it’s a shame the top teams don’t see each other throughout the year. Would love to see a Camden vs Buford dual. Would also like to see little ole single A Commerce wrestle Jefferson. Maybe make it a tri and see you guys smash Social Circle with their “big” win over Union Grove, I’m sure they would be up for the challenge.December 13, 2017 at 2:36 pm #8610AnonymousInactive
I have much Love and Respect for Commerce, but they wins 4 Matches against Jefferson 120,170,220,285 That’s it. Jefferson wins by more than 20. I have the same Love and respect for Social Circle. Jefferson beats them by more than 20. With all of that being said, Jefferson hasn’t changed their schedule for the 5 years we have been there. If any team wanted to wrestle Jefferson they know where they are and where they will be. Just a fact! We have been in the same tournament for several times with Commerce over the years and they couldn’t seem to hold their end of the bargain to get to the finals. After Saturday Jefferson will not wrestle in the State of GA till Area Duals. I would like to see Jefferson mix it up with Camden and Buford. As far as being that low on your rankings because of the schedule we wrestle, You got to beat the man to be the man! WOOOOOOOOOO
