InactiveI have never thought about this until today. Is inviting a team to senior night a sign of disrespect? When we first started Union Co. wrestling we were FIVE teams senior nights because they thought they could beat us…. and they did. I did not consider it a sign of disrespect, but I am wondering if anyone feels this way or is it just something that happens.
How do most people schedule senior night? Do you pick a team you can beat or just fill the date? Do you even have a senior night or just honor them at a banquet?January 23, 2018 at 9:11 pm #9627Anonymous
InactiveA lot of teams just schedule teams that they can beat. It can be disrespectful to a certain extent that’s why it’s just best to schedule a team that your squad can compete with to put on a good show. Let the seniors go out with a worthy home match and just not a waste of time

InactiveWell…..a team decided to have Commerce for Senior night last Friday. I guess I see this one in reverse, WHY WHY would you do that. 63-12 I think.

InactiveBut… some schools never have home matches to do senior night. I saw Commerce is doing theirs at Area is that correct? If so WOW guess do it whenever you get the chance too..
It’s just like homecoming for football, you want to make it an enjoyable night for your team.

InactiveIt think it depends really. For example this year I did my senior night early in the season and held it on a night that I was wrestling Alexander. One of the reasons I did this was I knew Alexander would bring a bunch of kids with them guaranteeing that all my seniors would get to wrestle on senior night. I made this decision due to many years of having teams show up with partial lineups and creating situations where seniors did not get to wrestle on the night that is supposed to be about them.

InactivePersonally I hate senior night. That is what the banquet is for imo. But no its not disrespectful, teams choose to say yes to mismatches and should take the opportunity to learn something.

InactiveIt’s just like homecoming opponents in football. The best idea I have seen is to do it as a group between all participating teams at regionals/Area Championships or at a county championship night for those counties that have those. More participation and less about the individual matchups in that kind of setting. And no implied disrespect to an opposing squad.

InactiveThat is a really good idea, Wrestling Dad! Maybe our new wrestling area next year will agree.

Not a bad idea, but some areas are a lot bigger than others. A senior night with all those could take forever, and because the stakes are higher there is not a guarantee that the senior will wrestle.

InactiveValid points. Just a good idea that I had heard this year. Several schools try to do them during their holiday tournaments they host also. I believe Buford did this at theirs back in December. Definitely not a blanket template to use across the board due to variables like you’ve mentioned. Kind of a case by case type thing I guess.
