Solid job on this ranking- thanks! You did better than I could/would have done- but there were for sure a few issues. Regardless, this is all just a fairy tale dream UNTIL we demand some type of formal -or informal- tournament with or without GHSA’s blessing.
What about an old-school “WrestleFest” tournament held with real refs at a local club or school, jack the price of door admission up to $15 or $20 per head and it will be standing room only. The wrestlers, parents and some coaches would want this. Some coaches, parents, and maybe even less confident wrestlers maybe would not want this – as some seem to shirk competition not realizing “iron sharpens iron” . This would not mean anything -until GHSA comes around – but bragging rights to find out who the cream of the crop truly is in each weight throughout GA Wrestling. Hold it the following weekend after State – give another +2/+3 across the board weight allowance- whatever- and all wrestlers have to wrestle in the weight bracket they did at Individual state. Just a thought! Take the Top 3 or 4 in each class and throw them in an unseeded random draw bracket – let’s get it on!
How can we make this happen? California only has (1) true State Champ – anyone placing in Top 12 in Cali has accomplished something. The wrestling mecca of the USA in PA has only (2) Champs – much respect to both. The wrestlers have accomplished something. Here in GA it is water downed at best as GA has freaking (7) State Champs in each weight class – that’s atrocious and not helping the state move forward and progress in the right direction for this sport! IS this so more could claim victory and make themselves feel better? Pompous and unrealistic.
If this does not happen call the title that the wrestlers will win exactly what it is- State Champion of a Specific Classification at a certain weight – NOt a true State Champ as perception understands it to be.
Highlander said it best, “There can be only one!”
PS. This same idea here should/could apply for a post on a Super Tournament for the GA Team Dual True Champs. Only 14 wrestlers on a roster and one each in every weight – no matter how big or small the school is. Do it! Do it! Do it!
